If you are an expert when it comes to shaping, sharing, and understanding the impact of a public health message, would you like your expertise to be recognized by your peers and public health leadership?

We will resume the formal program as soon as possible. In the meantime, NPHIC will continue to provide professional development support to our current CCPH credential holders.

Candidates for the CCPH credential must have earned a college degree and worked at least two years as a public health communicator, or a minimum of five years in public health practice absent a degree.

What is a public health communicator

A "Public Health Communicator" is defined as someone whose primary responsibility is the development and dissemination of information intended to reduce the burden of disease and injury throughout the general population or to targeted subsets of the general population by utilizing appropriate messages, messengers and means. This includes, but may not be limited to:
  • Public Information Officers who work for public health or voluntary health agencies;
  • Health Risk Communication Specialists who work for public health or voluntary health agencies;
  • Health Promotion Specialists who work for public health or voluntary health agencies;
  • Social Media Specialists who work for public health or voluntary health agencies;
  • Cross-cultural Communication Specialists who work for public health or voluntary health agencies;
  • Community Relations Specialists who work for public health or voluntary health agencies;
  • Other individuals in academia, private industry or in the not-for-profit setting whose duties require the skills of a public health communicator.

What you will need in your portfolio

Based on past candidates' experience, it could take 60 hours or more to prepare a comprehensive portfolio.
  • Your portfolio must include a narrative description of how you have demonstrated capabilities in each area of the Job Analysis, including the five Core Competencies. The total narrative must be limited to 15 pages. You will be asked to select two areas in which you claim expertise, and in all other areas you will show your working knowledge. In the expertise areas, you must receive a score of 8 or higher; working knowledge areas require a score of 5 or higher.
  • You will also be required to submit work products that demonstrate your knowledge of the field and an ability to apply it in everyday practice.
  • You will need to supply letters of attestation from people who know your work and confirm that the work products you submit are yours and yours alone.

The CCPH has become a standard of excellence for health communications practitioners and employers.
People who apply for the CCPH credential must undergo a rigorous portfolio review by their peers demonstrating expertise and working knowledge in 5 core competencies and 7 skillsets.
