Measles Cases Surge to Record High Since Disease was Declared Eliminated in the U.S.
Measles cases in the U.S. have surged to their highest level since the disease was declared eliminated in 2000, driven largely by undervaccinated communities and a major outbreak in West Texas. In 2025 alone, over 1,277 confirmed cases have been reported, surpassing the previous record from 2019.
Tragically, three unvaccinated individuals have died this year. Low vaccination rates—such as in Gaines County, TX, where nearly 25% of kindergartners remain unvaccinated—have fueled the outbreak. In response, states have expanded vaccination efforts, including early MMR doses for infants. However, ongoing outbreaks across 38 states highlight the urgent need for sustained vaccine outreach and public health vigilance to protect elimination status. Red more from CNN here.
