Climate Change’s Overlooked Role in Obesity

Climate change is increasingly recognized as a key factor in rising obesity rates, especially among children. As temperatures soar, physical activity declines, and people, particularly in urban areas, are more likely to stay indoors. Extreme heat also reduces crop yields, leading to higher food prices and the replacement of nutritious foods with calorie-dense, processed options.

This shift in diet, combined with reduced outdoor play, is contributing to higher obesity rates. Additionally, extreme heat impairs the body’s ability to regulate energy expenditure, increasing obesity risk. Effective solutions, such as climate-resilient agriculture and enhanced nutrition education, are urgently needed to address this growing issue. Read more from Global Health Now here.
