FDA Moves to Phase Out Ineffective Decongestant, Guiding Consumers to Better Relief Options
The FDA is taking steps to phase out phenylephrine, a common decongestant found in over-the-counter cold and allergy medicines, after studies revealed it is no more effective than a placebo when taken orally. Although phenylephrine remains effective in nasal sprays, its use in oral formulations, found in products like Sudafed and Dayquil, has been under scrutiny for years. This decision follows a unanimous recommendation from experts who determined the drug doesn’t relieve nasal congestion.
As a result, consumers may need to switch to alternatives like nasal steroids, antihistamine sprays, or pseudoephedrine-based medications, which remain available behind pharmacy counters. The move aims to help consumers make more informed choices and find more effective treatments. Read more from PBS here.
