New Surgeon General Report on Tobacco-Related Disparities
U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy’s latest report, Eliminating Tobacco-Related Disease and Death: Addressing Disparities, highlights persistent inequities in tobacco-related health outcomes. While overall tobacco use has declined since 1998, some groups remain disproportionately affected.
The report examines disparities in tobacco use, exposure to secondhand smoke, and health outcomes, emphasizing the role of menthol flavors, social and environmental factors, and targeted industry marketing. It also outlines policy strategies to promote tobacco-free living and achieve health equity. This 35th report on smoking and health envisions a future free of tobacco-related harm, urging public health professionals to advance efforts to eliminate disparities. Learn more from the CDC here.
