In Children, Covid is Tied to Higher Risk of Type 2 Diabetes
A new study published in JAMA Network Open found that children and adolescents are 1.5 times more likely to develop type 2 diabetes after a Covid-19 infection compared to those with other respiratory illnesses. The risk is even higher for children with obesity or those hospitalized with Covid-19.
Although the absolute risk remains low, this raises concerns about post-Covid monitoring for early signs of diabetes, such as increased thirst, frequent urination, and unexplained weight loss. Public health professionals should focus on raising awareness and promoting regular follow-ups to manage potential long-term complications from Covid-19 in children, especially those at higher risk.
