COVID-19 Remained at 'Very High' Activity Levels Across the U.S.
The latest CDC data shows that COVID-19 remains at "very high" activity levels across nearly half of the U.S., with 23 states reporting elevated wastewater viral activity between August 25 and 31. Wastewater monitoring has become a key tool in tracking the virus as traditional case counts lag.
The KP.3.1.1 variant, a descendant of JN.1 from late 2023, now accounts for 42.2% of positive infections, according to CDC's Nowcast. Despite the high levels of activity, a notable decline in positive cases was recorded in six Southern states, which saw a 4.4% decrease in test positivity during the same period.
