Mpox is a Global Health Emergency

The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared the mpox outbreaks in Africa, particularly Congo, a global health emergency. Despite this, experts believe mpox is unlikely to trigger another pandemic. Unlike airborne viruses such as COVID-19, mpox spreads primarily through close contact with infected individuals or contaminated items, and often causes visible skin lesions that reduce close physical interaction.

 

The risk of widespread outbreaks is low, and vaccines and treatments are available. While Europe is anticipating more imported cases, local outbreaks are considered unlikely. Rapid response and vaccination efforts are crucial, especially in regions like Congo where health infrastructure is severely strained. Read more from the AP here.
