CDC Data Show Improvements in Youth Mental Health But Need for Safer and More Supportive Schools

The latest CDC data reveal mixed trends in youth mental health, showing some improvement but also highlighting critical areas needing attention. Between 2021 and 2023, there were decreases in the percentage of teens feeling persistently sad or hopeless, with notable declines among female, Hispanic, and Black students.

However, the data also indicate rising concerns about school safety, including increased reports of school-based violence, bullying, and absenteeism due to safety fears. The report underscores significant disparities, particularly among female and LGBTQ+ students, who experience higher rates of violence and mental health challenges. The CDC emphasizes the need for safer, more supportive school environments to address these ongoing issues.
