Red Cross Faces Emergency Blood Shortage Caused in Part by Extreme Heat

The American Red Cross is grappling with a severe blood shortage, with national supplies dropping over 25% since July 1. Extreme heat waves have disrupted nearly 100 blood drives across the U.S., compounding the usual summer decline in donations and leading to a shortfall of over 19,000 donations in July. This shortage impacts crucial medical treatments, from trauma care to childbirth.

Type O blood, essential for emergencies, is particularly needed. The Red Cross urges all eligible donors to contribute, especially those with type O blood. Donors by August 31 will receive a $20 Amazon gift card. For more details, visit RedCrossBlood.org or call 1-800-RED-CROSS. Read more from NBC here.
