New York City’s Public Health Vending Machine Program Ends

New York City's public health vending machine program, launched in January 2022, dispensed over 18,000 items, including 2,100 naloxone kits, COVID tests, and safe sex products. Despite plans for ten machines, only four were installed due to a lack of interested managing organizations. These machines, located in Brooklyn and Queens, provided free harm-reduction supplies without vending fees, requiring only a NYC zip code.

Managed by community-based organizations, each machine stocked items tailored to local needs. Although initial skepticism existed, the machines have become a valuable resource. The program ended in May 2023, but the Health Department remains committed to overdose prevention efforts. Read the full story here.
