Blood Test has a 90 Percent Accuracy Rate in Determining Whether Memory Loss is Due to Alzheimer’s

A new study from Lund University in Sweden reveals that a blood test measuring p-tau217 can determine if memory loss is due to Alzheimer’s disease with over 90 percent accuracy. Published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, the test outperforms diagnoses from specialists (73 percent) and primary care doctors (61 percent).

Traditional Alzheimer’s diagnostic methods are costly and hard to access, but this blood test could streamline the process and accelerate treatment. The p-tau217 test detects specific blood peptides associated with Alzheimer’s, offering a more accessible alternative to brain imaging and spinal taps. This advancement holds promise for improving clinical care and prognostication in Alzheimer's patients. Read more in The Hill here.
