Prior Authorization Hurts Patient Care

A recent AMA survey reveals that prior authorization is significantly affecting patient care and physician burnout. Over 90% of physicians believe this process negatively impacts patient outcomes, with 78% noting that it often leads patients to abandon recommended treatments. The survey highlights that prior authorization can delay access to necessary care, contributing to serious adverse events and increased hospitalizations.

Physicians spend an average of 12 hours weekly on these requirements, exacerbating burnout and inefficiencies. Additionally, 87% of physicians feel that prior authorization raises overall healthcare costs and leads to higher patient expenses. The AMA is calling for reforms to mitigate these challenges and improve patient care. Read more from AMA here.
