Take Steps to Protect Yourself if Exposed to Radioactive Particles

Radioactive contamination can occur due to accidents, natural events, or intentional acts, posing serious health risks. The CDC provides essential guidance and tools to mitigate radiation hazards. In a radiation emergency, immediate action is crucial.

Get inside a building, preferably brick or concrete, and move to the basement or center, staying away from walls and roofs where radioactive material settles. If in a car, seek shelter or stay put with windows closed and ventilation off. Stay indoors for at least 24 hours or until officials declare it safe. Rely on communication devices for updates and do not return to evacuated areas until clearance is given. Learn more from the CDC here.
