Phoenix Uses Cold-Water Immersion to Treat Heatstroke

Health officials in Phoenix, AZ have adopted cold-water immersion techniques, traditionally used by marathoners and the military, to treat heatstroke victims amid rising temperatures. Following a record 645 heat-related deaths last year, the Phoenix fire department now uses ice-filled body bags to rapidly reduce patients' body temperatures en route to hospitals.

 

This method is part of broader efforts to combat extreme heat, including keeping cooling stations open overnight. With excessive-heat warnings in effect and temperatures expected to exceed 110°F, nearby cities are also activating cooling measures to protect residents from the blistering heat.
