Once Called Nantucket Fever, This Nasty Tick-Borne Illness is on the Rise

Babesiosis, once known as Nantucket fever, is increasing, posing public health concerns. Symptoms often mimic Lyme disease but can be severe, especially in older adults or those with weakened immune systems.

 

A new trial aims to test the efficacy of tafenoquine, an anti-malaria drug, in treating babesiosis more effectively. Initial studies show promise, with patients experiencing significant improvement. With tick season underway, heightened awareness and testing are crucial. Although tafenoquine is currently used off-label, successful trials could lead to FDA approval for babesiosis treatment, addressing the growing threat of tick-borne illnesses. Read more from NPR here.
