Questions Linger Over cost of OTC Birth Control Pills

Perrigo Company is set to release its Opill birth control pill in the first quarter of this year, but the retail price remains undisclosed as the company emphasizes accessibility. Concerns arise from the precedent set by over-the-counter (OTC) hearing aids in 2022, where the ultimate cost exceeded expectations without insurance coverage.

 

Lawmakers and activists are urging the federal government, led by California Gov. Gavin Newsom and other Democratic governors, to ensure Opill's affordability by expanding private insurance coverage for OTC products. Surveys show that 40 percent of reproductive-aged women are willing to pay $1 to $10 monthly, while only 16 percent would pay more than $20. Read more from The Hill here.
