COVID-19 Surveillance After Expiration of the Public Health Emergency Declaration

On January 31, 2020, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) declared COVID-19 a U.S. public health emergency. The public health emergency will expire on May 11, 2023. While most CDC’s COVID-19 programs, activities, and data activities will not be affected by the PHE’s expiration, they are still actively engaging with their partners to ensure you are aware of planned updates after May 11th, and to ensure they are effectively communicating about any specific concerns related to the PHE’s expiration.

The CDC published two new MMWRs to detail several ways the federal COVID-19 public health emergency (PHE) expiration will impact CDC’s COVID-19 surveillance efforts. The publications are: “Surveillance After the Expiration of the PHE Declaration – United States, May 2023” and “Correlations and Timeliness of COVID-19 Surveillance Data Sources and Indicators ― United States, October 1, 2020–March 22, 2023.” These publications detail several ways the federal COVID-19 public health emergency (PHE) expiration will impact CDC’s COVID-19 surveillance efforts.  Read more from the CDC here.
