CDC Reports Significant Decline in U.S. Drug Overdose Deaths, But Prevention Efforts Must Continue

New CDC data shows a nearly 24% decline in U.S. drug overdose deaths, with approximately 87,000 fatalities from October 2023 to September 2024—the lowest in any 12-month period since June 2020. This progress reflects the impact of public health investments, improved data systems, and expanded naloxone access.

The Overdose Data to Action (OD2A) program plays a key role, funding state and local health departments to track and respond to emerging drug threats. While 45 states saw declines, overdose remains the leading cause of death for ages 18-44. Continued investments in evidence-based treatment and prevention remain critical to sustaining this progress.
