Researchers Tried to Fix a Racist Lung Test. It Got Complicated.

A recent article highlights the complexities surrounding a new race-neutral spirometry algorithm adopted by institutions like Boston Medical Center. Historically, lung function tests categorized patients by race, often deeming Black and Asian individuals sicker compared to their White counterparts. This bias has led to misdiagnoses and inadequate treatment for many patients of color.

The new algorithm aims to eliminate these disparities, but its implementation could reclassify many Black patients as having severe impairment, affecting eligibility for jobs and benefits. While the change is a step toward equity, it raises concerns about unintended consequences and the need for comprehensive assessments beyond race. Read more from Harvard Public Health here.
