JAMA Network: Trust and 2024 Public Priorities for the CDC and State Health Departments

NPHIC was included as one of the co-authors in a new survey study published in JAMA Health Forum. The study highlights the current public health priorities and trust levels in the CDC and state health departments post-COVID-19. Conducted among 2,663 U.S. adults in late 2023, the study reveals significant trust in these agencies, with 75% trusting the CDC and 79% trusting state health departments. Top public health priorities identified include preventing chronic diseases, addressing mental illness, reducing infant mortality, and combating substance addiction.

These priorities garnered broad support even among those with lower trust levels. However, issues like controlling COVID-19, addressing racial disparities, and preventing gun injuries remain divisive. The findings suggest that public health agencies can leverage widespread support on key issues to build broader trust and advocate for bipartisan support, while strategic communication is essential for more contentious areas.
