May Is Older Americans Month: Elder Abuse Is a Social Determinant of Health

This post on health.gov discusses addressing Elder Abuse to improve health outcomes for older adults and promotes aging in place. The Elder Justice Initiative at the U.S. Department of Justice provides training and resources to help promote the health and well-being of older adults. The study of the social determinants of health (SDOH) has identified how social factors contribute to poor (and often inequitable) health outcomes. A factor that contributes to poor health outcomes is elder abuse. Though typically not associated with the SDOH literature, elder abuse is a form of interpersonal violence and as such falls under the rubric of SDOH. Addressing elder abuse may contribute to better health outcomes for older adults while promoting aging in place.
